The level of protection analysis (LOPA) is used to identify multiple independent protection layers that mitigate a potential hazard. The analysis accounts for non-instrumented protections such as operator interactions, alarms, passive protections like rupture disks  and external mitigations such as dikes or protective enclosures.

The LOPA can also be used to determine the necessary safety integrity level of a safety instrumented functions if a target likelihood for the hazardous event can be defined.
