Risk Analysis associates a risk ratings with identified hazards. The so determined 'unmitigated risk' needs to be lowered if the initial risk level is above a predetermined maximum level. The resulting risk is then again evaluated to determine the remaining (residual) risk and to determine if the mitigation is appropriate to reliably achieve the necessary level of risk reduction. Additionally any mitigation has to be evaluated to determine if it induced a new, so far not identified hazard.
